Della Gatta studied as a student of Giacomo Cestaro at the Accademia del Disegno, the design academy in Naples that is now part of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli. At the age of 10 he was admitted to the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella di Napoli in Naples, studied with I. Piazza and obtained his diploma as a performing flautist in 1893.
